On October 17-19, 2017, under the auspices of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (GICNT), the Government of Tajikistan hosted the nuclear detection tabletop exercise, “Roof of the World.” Co-Chaired by the Russian Federation and the United States, GICNT has grown to include 88 partner nations and five official observer organizations committed to working together to prevent, detect and respond to nuclear terrorism.
“Roof of the World” provided an opportunity for customs, law enforcement, and technical experts from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan to discuss challenges to operational coordination for detecting and responding to nuclear and other radioactive material out of regulatory control. It also presented an opportunity for partner nations to share best practices to promote the development and implementation of national nuclear security exercises and exercise programs. Finally, the exercise highlighted work of GICNT and regional partners in promoting the development and strengthening of national nuclear detection architectures. Participants agreed on the importance of regional collaboration on nuclear security and the valuable role of the GICNT in helping partner nations strengthen national capabilities.
