Dushanbe, Tajikistan, September 25, 2020 – The Office of Military Cooperation of the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe provided 169,600 Tajik somoni worth of assistance to Tajikistan’s National Guard to combat the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The assistance consisted of personal protective equipment and sanitizing supplies, including: 11000 protective masks, 100 protective jumpsuits, 1000 respirator masks, 100 sets of protective eyewear, thermometers, antiseptic spray, and other supplies to support sanitization activities.
The Office of Military Cooperation worked with the National Guard to identify the most needed supplies and provided this equipment support their staff during this crisis.
Ambassador John Mark Pommersheim noted, “This assistance is an example of the enduring security and health cooperation between the United States and Tajikistan, which gets stronger each year. The U.S. government and American people have provided over $5 million in assistance to Tajikistan to support the fight against COVID-19, and we have provided over $200 million in security-sector assistance to Tajikistan since 2002.”
The Office of Military Cooperation has provided over $155 million in security sector assistance to Tajikistan since 2007, which has included infrastructure projects, training, and equipment donations. Most recently, this office financed the reconstruction of the Okultun Border Outpost in Shahritus district in 2019 at a cost of $900,000.
